There is a national shortage of blood bottles anticipated until November at the earliest, such that availability is reduced to 40% of normal. In order to rationalise tests we are not able to do blood tests for routine health checks or non-urgent clinical concerns as we attempt to prioritise blood tests for urgent patient assessment in the GP surgery as well as the hospital. We are all sharing the same limited resource and so as a surgery we have been asked to justify the urgency of any test we order. This may mean that you are asked to delay any desired blood test that is not urgent. I can reassure you that this clinical decision is made by a doctor at the surgery on a case by case basis, and if there is doubt you may be contacted by the surgery to discuss further so that an appropriate plan is made. Any postponed test will be rearranged when availability is restored. Thank you for your understanding in this difficult time.
